Dr. Mark J. Holterman, an Accomplished Medical Practitioner, Educator and Philanthropist

Dr. Mark J. Holterman is a leading professor in the College of Medicine at the University of Illinois. Besides serving as an educator, Dr. Mark holds other positions in various organizations. The accomplished professor doubles up as the Chief Executive officer of Mariam Global Health and as an attending pediatric surgeon at several hospitals, which include the Children’s Hospital of Illinois, the Advocate Christ Children’s Hospital and the St. Francis Medical Center.

Dr. Mark J. Holterman is an affiliate of numerous professional bodies; among them is the American Diabetes Association (ADA), which in September 2017 joined hands with Children’s Hospital Los Angeles in the quest of fighting type two diabetes that has recorded a steady increase in youth and children (Strikingly). The bodies have come up with a program dubbed Camp PowerUp, which aims at tackling the pandemic through inculcating the culture of regular exercise in teenagers and eating of healthy foods. These two practices are fundamental in reducing the risk of type two diabetes.


The Camp PowerUp initiative targets diverse youth groups who are within the age of 8-16. The sponsors of the programs are optimistic that the use of evidence-based curriculum will have a profound impact in minimizing incidences of type two diabetes in young people.


Dr. Mark Holterman has a strong focus on changing the lives of many communities. This has pushed him to take part in many charity courses. The International Pediatric Specialists Alliance for the Children of Vietnam (IPSAC-VN) is one of the organizations that have benefited from his support. This charity organization relies heavily on volunteers and donor funding to run its activities. Some of its duties range from the provision of care to patients, training of staff, facilitation of surgery to teaching in hospitals and medical schools across Vietnam.


Dr. Mark Holterman graduated from Yale University with a specialization in Biology. The professor later advanced to the University of Virginia, where he earned his MD and Ph.D. He also carried out his residency in general surgery at the same institution. Additionally, Dr. Mark J. Holterman holds a fellowship in Pediatric Surgery from the University of Washington.
